Simon’s News – October 2018 As we approach the end of October, our family Halloween Events are in full swing. Each year, the Becketts Farm witches open up their Pumpkin Parlour and Halloween Kitchen for pumpkin carving and spooky baking sessions. It’s lots of fun and I’d really recommend booking your child or grandchild a place if you haven’t already. There are still a handful of spaces remaining. Earlier this month, I was asked to judge a ‘Chocolate Challenge’ team building session in the Orange Kitchen Cookery School. The teams are given two and a half hours to create a...

Simon’s News – September 2018

On the Farm this month we’ve drilled the winter wheat and plan to drill around 100 acres of beans later in October. I’ve enjoyed some delicious meals out this month, with the most memorable dish being this amazing soufflé. You will know from my previous blogs that I am a keen cook and as soufflé is notorious for being a technically difficult dish to make, I’ve got my sights set high on learning to make them. I also ate at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir in Oxfordshire last weekend, where the excellent food and service we experienced while dining was tainted...
Simon’s News – August 2018

As in the hymn, ‘all is safely gathered in’. Our harvest this year has been easy with the weather, so we combined the last of the beans this week, just before the end of August. We’re still busy on the farms as the cycle starts once more with next years’ oil seed rape already planted ready for harvest in 10 months’ time. An old photo of me emerged this month, which I thought I’d share here and encourage any compliments on this amazing perm that I had back in the day when perms were all the rage. Cooking has been...
Simon’s News July 2018

This month it has been busy out on the Farm as we begin the harvesting which is happening much faster than usual, and there are no prizes for guessing the reason behind that… the weather! It seems we are always discussing it, but it really does play a vital part in what we do, and in a changeable climate such as ours, who can blame us for discussing it. We’ve seen so many extremes this year, from heavy snowfall with the Beast from the East, flash flooding only a couple of months back and now it’s set to be the...
Simon’s News June 2018

Farming is going very well this month and the dry weather is compensating for the wet weather and flooding that we had last month. As farmers we are all so aware of just how changeable the British weather can be, and we’re never quite happy with it either. In the nice weather I’ve been out mowing the lawns, I find mowing lawns really cathartic and I love it when you manage to get some stripes in there too. The skies over the Wythall area have been treating us to some amazing sunsets recently and they really make me appreciate working...
Simon’s News May 2018
I ended last month’s newsletter just as I was preparing for a trip to Northern Spain and promised to let you all know how it was in my next instalment. It was a bike trip, and the briefest description I can give of it is that it was wet. Very wet! Northern Spain in early May was extremely rainy, which is no fun when you’re on a biking holiday. Thank goodness for Google as I was able to search the weather forecast and try to travel to where it was most dry. All in all though it was a great...
Simon’s News April 2018
Simons News – April 2018 You may have read in my last news that I had got my eyes set on a cross Jack Russel and Fox Terrier puppy, from the local animal rescue trust ‘Hollytree’s’. Well I couldn’t just settle for Geoffrey I had to bring home Geoffrey’s mum Jessica too. They have settled in well to their rural surroundings and Geoffrey is looking forward to visiting the office with Jessica as they become a part of the office team! The ladies in the office are excited for the new additions and I’m sure they will be included in...
Simon’s News – March 2018
Simons News – March 2018 I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter; I hope you’re all enjoying lots of family time over this wet Bank Holiday Weekend. As we head into April there is still no sign of Spring, it appears we get tempted with a few days of blue skies and warmer temperatures and then the heavens open again with wet and windy weather. Fingers crossed we have escaped the Beast from the East part 3 and get out on the mower this month. As cold as it may have been in March, we did manage to...
Simon’s News – February 2018
Simon’s News – February 2018 It’s almost March – hard to believe when my last blog contained stories from Christmas and with the sub-zero temperatures outside there’s certainly no sign of spring just yet. We’re hoping for warmer weather over the next couple of weeks as we will ideally need to start applying the first lot of fertilisers to the oil seed rape and the wheat. Cold as it may have been, February was a very busy and exciting month here at Becketts. During the first fortnight, we closed the doors to the restaurant for a fortnight, something we haven’t...
Simon’s News – January 2018
Simon’s News – January 2018 Christmas came and went for another year and was thoroughly enjoyable. Now it is full steam ahead into the New Year! It’s a while since I last wrote my monthly blog and so there’s a fair bit to catch up on. In December my father and I went over to South Africa to visit my son Liam, his wife Eluned and my grandson Reilly. It’s an annual tradition and is always lovely to see them at such a special time of year. Christmas in the Farm Shop and Restaurant were as busy as ever, and...
Simon’s News – November 2017
Simon’s News – November 2017 Christmas is on the horizon and by the time I write next, the guy in the big red suit will be nearly here, or may have in fact already been! The Christmas tree has gone up outside the Farm Shop, an 18ft Norway Spruce from local business Woods Farm. The whole team here at Becketts are gearing up for our busiest time of year, with the Butchers now taking orders for Christmas meats from Caldecott’s Farm, the Bakers baking Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies and Yule Logs galore, the restaurant serving Christmas lunches from this Monday...
Simon’s News – October 2017
Simon’s News – October 2017 We’ve just had a successful week of Halloween fun with our Pumpkin Parlour and Halloween Kitchen events, organised by our fantastic Marketing and Events team. Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year here at Becketts, the staff put in such a great effort ditching their usual day jobs and dressing up as spooky characters and carve over 700 pumpkins throughout the week it really is brilliant. Never dare the Managing Director to do anything either, today I am getting into the spirit of Halloween and will be wearing this ghostly headband all...
